Sopwith Triplane
- My Dare Sopwith Triplane, covered in Solartex, with an outrunner-style brushless motor, 8 1400mah Nimh cells, and an 8x6 propeller. This power plant is magnificent; energetic climbs, liesurely flights, around 10 minutes flight time.

Dare Engineering Mosquito
Here's a pic of my Mossie under
construction. Still got a way to go, but the main pieces are together, as
you can see. The laser cut parts were really well done, and the two
plastic canopies look awesome!

Hi Terry,
Just
wanted to say that my Marionette is still going strong - we have a
weekly indoor fly at one of the local sports domes, and the plane is a
complete crowd stopper. I think virtually everyone there has come past
me at some point or another when I've had the plane down, and commented
on how well the plane looks and flies. I had an appalling crash with it
2 weeks ago due to an unexplained radio glitch, but it only took a
couple of hours to get it back together and it's fine now.
|
 |
|
I'm using a 2-cell 1200mAh Li-Poly, and
can get around an hour of flying between charges!
I'm getting closer to having the Mossie
built up - installed the engines, found some counter-rotating 3-bladed
props, now I need to install the radio gear and get covering. I'll send
you a pic when I'm getting close.
Cheers -

Dare Engineering B25
I enjoyed talking with you about Mike and his designs. I scanned in the
old photo of the B-25, adjusted the colors, and it looks a lot better than
the original. Aren't computers amazing! |

This 1928 Curtiss Robin model was built form a Dare
Engineering kit. The laser cut parts made for very accurate
construction. It is powered with an Astro brushless motor. The
plane has been flown several times and has excellent flight
characteristics. It has a nice scale appearance in the air.
It's like going back in time!
This was a great kit to build. It is powered with a
Astro brushless motor. Look forward to flying it soon.

Dare Engineering Sopwith Triplane
After seeing the Sopwith Triplane in flight
I decided I needed to have one. The kit was adequate, but, took a bit of
sanding because of rough wood strips. The plans were well done and self
explanatory. I only modified the battery mounting to meet the CG, adding a
hatch on the underside of the fuselage. This was my first WWI model and I
wanted a more realistic covering than what I could get with Nelson's (Solite).
I used Airspan with Balsaloc and found it to be very nice to work with.
Compound curves are a bit difficult, but, not any worse than tissue.
The most difficult part was in getting the wings aligned properly.
Finally used a jig that set dihedral and washout for all three sets of
wings at once. Also found out during test flying that the rigging is
essential for proper flight.
I used a sp400 in an MPJet 3:1 gearbox,
10x7 APC Slofly prop, 3s1500 Kokam LiPo battery. The wheels are made from
laminated 1/16" balsa and ply with screen door ribbing for tires. Covering
is airspan painted with craft store acrylics (Gambral Green, Black, and
Parchment). The insignia were done in vinyl by Callie Graphics here in
Albuquerque. I do not take a lot of care to built light and still ended up
with a 19oz weight (RTF).
The plane flies very well and is capable of
all 3 ch (R/E/T) aerobatics. Landings and takeoffs are mild by WWI model
standards, but, take some getting used to. Takeoff is in about 30 feet.
The plane likes to climb! Just like the original. Cruise can be done at
about 1/3 throttle and this setup gives me flight times of about 20
minutes. Landings are best done with power on to set the proper
attitude for a good three point landing.
Since I am still a novice, the plane has
been not been treated nicely. It has survived several cartwheels on
botched takeoffs, and some pretty rough landings. The top wing came off
once. Just glued it back on and applied some covering patches. Really
tough structure.
The plane is a very stable flier and looks
wonderful in flight. I always get compliments on it as well as a lot of
folks who just like seeing something different at the field. |

Loren Perry
Hi! - I've recently completed a radio controlled
Dare Designs 1/7 scale Piper Cub model airplane with a five foot wingspan
and a Nippy Black brushless electric motor for power. Essentially a
large park flyer, it weighs 42 ounces with a ten cell 1700 mah battery
pack and is very slow, stable, and easy to fly. I've also fitted it
with a controllable tow hook and have made a couple of banners that the
model can take into the air. The
photos show me flying the model earlier this week in Lopez Village here on
Lopez Island in Northwest Washington State where I operate the plane from
an open field across from the Love Dog Cafe.
Every Friday afternoon, a group of war
protesters gather in front of the Love Dog Cafe here in the middle of the
village and they hold up U.N. flags, No Iraq War posters, and similar
things. Last week, I surprised them when I launched the Cub towing a six
foot banner reading Vote For Bush. A
second banner that reads Re-Elect Bush is also used and is set up to be
read from the opposite direction so I have choice of which way the message
reads depending on prevailing winds.
I flew the model slowly and steadily the
length of the main road, just over the behind the protesters at about 50
feet altitude. People came out of the restaurant and the nearby market to
see the sign it was towing. A few folks came over to my area to get a
closer look. After each battery pack was exhausted, I brought the model
back over me and commanded the tow hook to release the banner after which
I circled around and made a normal landing.
A
quick battery change, and the Piper Cub took off for the next sortie,
easily lifting its banner off the ground. I did this for about 45 minutes
until all the batteries were used up. Typical flight time is ten minutes
with the banner in tow.
|

 |
|
Over
five days of this, I've logged fourteen successful "psychological warfare
operations" (PsyOps) missions and the Cub is performing beautifully. The
reaction from the protesters was surprising to me - they LOVED it! They
actually thought the model and its banner were really a great way to have
fun with politics today. I have to admit that the protesters displayed
real class, and we actually got along well. But at least I'm getting my
message out! And I'm making some new and unusual friends, too. I'll make
some more banners with different messages just for fun.
Thought you'd enjoy this -
pass it along if you want!
